The Ricketts Apple-1 is the only known surviving Apple-1 with documentary evidence of a direct sale by Steve Jobs to an individual customer. Two original cancelled checks retained by Charles Ricketts document the transaction: check no. 233 for US$600, dated July 27, 1976, for the Apple-1 purchased directly from Jobs, and check no. 249 for US$193, dated August 5, 1976, for software/programming.
The board is housed in a custom-made, medium-blue painted metal enclosure with a screwed-on Plexiglas cover, originally fitted by Ricketts. A period Datanetics keyboard is mounted in a wooden case and is missing one key. The set also includes period power supplies with 7550 and 7617 date codes and an original white Apple-1 Operation Manual.
The Apple-1 was serviced and successfully operated by Corey Cohen in October 2014, running Microsoft BASIC and an original Apple-1 Star Trek game.
Charles Ricketts acquired this Apple-1 directly from Steve Jobs in Los Altos on July 27, 1976, for US$600. The computer later passed by descent to Ricketts’s son.
Christie’s provenance lists Neil Brian Goldberg of Computer Jones, Santa Cruz, followed by Bruce Waldack, founder of DigitalNation, as owners in 1999. At a La Salle Gallery auction in San Francisco on June 29, 1999, Captain Owen O’Mahoney, a retired Royal Air Force officer, was publicly identified as the successful telephone bidder at US$18,000. Later reporting stated that O’Mahoney had allowed others to use his name in connection with the sale, which may explain why he does not appear in Christie’s formal provenance.
The Apple-1 was subsequently sold from Waldack’s property by the Office of the Sheriff of Fairfax County, Virginia, on December 14, 2004, as item 39. It was acquired by Bob Luther, who researched its history and published The First Apple in 2013.
Luther consigned the computer to Christie’s The Exceptional Sale in New York, where it sold on December 11, 2014, for US$365,000.

All additional components and modifications were removed prior to the last auction. To name a few: some components and wires added to the breadboard, white EPROM on the breadboard, keyboard connector, power switch, and video out on the back of the blue metal enclosure.
